I was deeply invested in my career when I felt the LORD place in my heart the desire to one day homeschool. I was not yet a mother, worked full-time, but was completely inspired by the women who went before me. Before I knew it, I was pregnant and the desire remained, but with many apprehensions.

Many thoughts circulated my mind. I knew I would phase several trials. I wrestled with the idea of being the first in my family to pioneer into this unknown territory. What a scary notion. Thoughts centered on challenges, changes and pivots, and financial adversities kept me at a halt.

“No, I could not do it,” I told myself. Too much was at stake…like financial freedom and the aspirations of tomorrow.

However, God would have a different plan that started with a simple seed of admiration for others going before me. Later, I would find myself catapulted into the realm of homeschooling largely due to facing limitations and failures from our neighborhood’s public school system.

Through this experience, I finally accepted how truly at stake my children’s academic and spiritual future were.

It was in that season that I had to ask myself the following question, “What would I be willing to sacrifice? My aspirations or my children’s future?”

I chose to sacrifice my aspirations.

So far, it has been the most beautiful and challenging decision of my life. Because of this, I will give you five reasons why I chose and have stuck with homeschooling despite the hard days. My hope with this post is to help you make a decision about homeschooling if you are on the fence.

REASON #1: I am not willing to gamble my children’s future in a broken school/world system

If you have the resources to place your child in a prestigious school that provides a healthy community and necessary resources, consider yourself blessed. Unfortunately, not everyone shares these circumstances. It certainly was not ours. Due to this, for me, my children’s academic success was not up for debate. Homeschooling allowed me the opportunity to work one-on-one with my children and provide the extra support they would not otherwise receive in our school district.

REASON #2: I get more than just 18 summers with my children before they go off on their own.

To be quite frank, I realistically will get about 12 to 13 summers, since that is roughly the age they likely will desire to be with peers more so than with me. I do not know about you, but those are not enough summers, and I want to enjoy every bit of time with my children that I can. Working parents average around 832 hours a year with their children. Homeschooling parents average 2,912. For children in public/private sectors, that means on average they get three hours of quality time per week with their parents. Homeschooling triples those hours… TRIPLES. My cup of tea. Example of this, I often find myself crying a lot when I have to head to work (I do still work part-time) because there’s nothing more that I’d rather do than be with them.

REASON #3: It continues to grow ME

Homeschooling is not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to literally do life with your children and die to self. Among all the reasons, this is perhaps my biggest spiritual blessing. There are daily challenging moments, if I am being brutally honest, that always land me at the feet of Jesus. In those moments, I find myself becoming aware of things that still need to be surrendered or grown within me. Things such as expectations, grace, patience, and perseverance. Because of these moments, I am constantly reminded of my need for the LORD, which allows my heart to stay in a state of humility-exactly where he wants it (Proverbs 22:4).

REASON #4: The LORD is at the center of our day

Above all the other reasons, I would say this is the most important one for me. In the current political and global climate our country finds itself in, I have found children are being conditioned through instructional propaganda via the school system. Institutions and ideological groups want to insist homeschooling is cult-like; however, I would argue the opposite is true. Schools used to provide an educational foundation of critical and free thinking. The freedom of free speech and thought were at the crux of learning. Yet, I have found in modern day society, if one does not agree with the majority you are ostracized, bullied or condemned. The irony is how common thought is established through these school systems via bias-laced educational presets chosen by politically driven ideologies. Talk about group theory. No thanks.

Through homeschooling, not only am I able to provide multiple opportunities to learn different views-yes, I still teach them- but I get the blessing of keeping the LORD at the center of our lives. My hope is that one day they would choose the LORD because they witnessed how real HE was in our lives during these years. Additionally, they would learn to think thoroughly about the differences in the world and world views, while coming to a conclusion themselves about what they believe. And not because I forced it, not because the popular kids chose it, not because they were bullied into it, but because they believed it for themselves.

REASON # 5: Our hearts are protected from nonsensical bullying and school shootings.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children aged 10 to 14 had a suicide rate of 2.1-2.3 per 100,000. This rate doubled between the ages of 15 to 24. In 2023, suicide was reported as the second leading cause of death between the age group 10 to 44 years of age (CDC). I don’t know about you, but my stomach turns reading how suicide occurs between the ages of 10-14. This should not be. Period. However, this is the state of our world.

Homeschooling provides a safety-net from this-even though it is not bulletproof. Moreover, I get the opportunity to be thoughtful and intentional with who we fellowship with. We have open arms to meeting people and having social experiences, but we guard our hearts from deeper connection unless deemed equally yolk. Homeschooling provides this gift. A gift that has no price too high to obtain.

Furthermore, IntelliSee.com reports there were 233 school shootings in the United States in 2025.

Another stomach-turning reality.

Again, homeschooling provides a safety cushion from these horrendous realities. While life is not perfect, nor is safety ever guaranteed, I do have a greater peace of mind knowing where my children are.

For these reasons, and honestly more, I choose to homeschool. Ultimately, we choose to homeschool because the LORD led us here. Until HE leads us elsewhere, we find ourselves blessed being here.
